Theft is exactly as it sounds – it’s the taking of property of another person without their permission. There are different levels of theft in Minnesota, and the sentence depends widely on the value of the property that was stolen. These offenses range from Misdemeanors to Felonies.

Fighting The Different Levels Of Theft

The different levels of theft in Minnesota are defined by Minn.Stat.§609.52 and are defined by the value to the victim:

  •  Less than $500.  This is a Misdemeanor, with a maximum punishment of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
  • $500 but less than $1,000.  This is a Gross Misdemeanor, with a maximum punishment of  1 year in jail and a $3,000 fine.
  • $1,000 but less than $5,000.  This is a Felony, with a maximum penalty of  5 years in prison and a fine of $10,000.  $5,000
  • More than $5,000.  This is a Felony, with a maximum penalty of  10 years in prison or a $20,000 fine.
  • More than $35,000.  This is a Felony, with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
